The Home Energy Rating System (H.E.R.S.) is a systematic and standardized approach to inspect and analyze the energy usage of each home. The result is a report of the home's energy efficiency and also recommends cost-effective measures to make the home more energy efficient. The goal of a HERS rating is to move every home in America closer to a Zero energy home and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. It is a nationally utilized scale to determine a homes energy efficiency and recommends the highest value improvements.
Someone trained in the Home Energy Rating System, a HERS rater, is a special inspector for the building department that acts as a third party to verify energy efficiency improvements. In addition to third party verifications HERS raters may also be trained as HERS II raters or Whole House Raters.
There are special diagnostic tools needed to rate your home under the Home Energy Rating System standards. These tools must be calibrated and used in combination with computer software to accurately assess your home.
These tools include:
- Blower door to measure building leakage
- Duct Blaster to measure duct leakage
- Thermal Camera to find leakage and insulation issues
- CalRatePro software to model your homes energy usage
Calculating the expense to operate your home can provide valuable information about the true cost of owning your home and provide cost-effective solutions.
